A carbon footprint is "the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event or product" [1]. Indeed all of us contribute to GHG emissions and here are a few tips on how you can make a change toward a cleaner, greener planet.
At Home why not
use your tumble dryer less and let clothes dry naturally.
wash your clothes with cold/warm water.
have colder showers or baths (it will also help boost your immune system)
replace any incandescent light bulbs with LEDs. Compact Fluorescents will also save energy however they are highly toxic and dangerous to our environment as explained in here.
use the microwave more. Microwaves use a lot less energy than conventional ovens and stoves, especially for heating water.
turn your lights off when you no longer need them on.
wear more layers in your home and turn the thermostat down a little.
try lowering the thermostat on your water heater and wrap it with an insulated blanket.
turning the tap off while brushing your teeth. You will save 25 gallons (114 ltrs) of water a month.
try reducing the water in your toilet tank. Putting a litre bottle filled with water in your toilet tank can save 300 gallons (1364 ltrs) per month.
use cloth napkins instead of paper ones.
remember to unplug your electronics. Most electronics still use some energy even when turned off. This 'standby mode' or 'phantom load' drains up to 10 percent of electricity used in most homes.
